Cutting your hair by the moon is an old piece of European folklore, still printed in many a farmer's almanac. The idea is charmingly simple: the moon moves the tides, so why not your fringe? Traditionally, a waxing moon is the time to cut hair you want to grow back thick and fast, while a waning moon keeps a short cut short for longer.

The moon's sign matters too. Leo days are said to be the very best for a cut, promising a mane worthy of the lion, and Virgo days come close behind for neat, well-behaved hair. Cancer and Pisces days, the watery ones, are traditionally avoided. Does your hairdresser need to know any of this? Probably not. But it makes booking the appointment a lot more fun.
