What your Moon sign actually tells you
A moon sign calculator answers one simple question: which zodiac sign was the Moon in when you were born? In astrology, the Moon stands for your inner weather. It shows how you feel, what makes you feel safe and how you comfort yourself on a bad day.
Your Sun sign describes who you are becoming. Your Moon sign describes what you need to get there. Two people can share a Sun sign and still react to stress in completely different ways, and the Moon is the usual suspect.
Nebu has watched about nine thousand years of human moods and can confirm: knowing your emotional default setting is surprisingly useful. It is not a verdict. It is a handy map of your own habits.
How the calculator finds your Moon sign
The Moon is the fastest body in the sky. It travels through all twelve signs in about 27 days and stays in each sign for roughly two and a half days. That is why your Moon sign can be a different sign than the one your friend with the same birthday month has.
The calculator uses the real position of the Moon on your birth date, not a rough table. If you add your birth time and birthplace, the result is exact down to the minute, with the time zone and historical daylight saving time taken into account.
If you skip the birth time, you still get a result. In about one case out of three or four, the Moon changed sign during your birth date. Then Nebu shows you both possible signs together with the hour of the change, so you can check with your birth certificate or ask a relative.
Do you need your birth time?
Not always, but it helps. On most days the Moon stays in one sign from midnight to midnight, and the date alone is enough. On a change day, only the time can tell you which of the two signs is yours.
Your birth time is often noted on your birth certificate or in a baby book. If you cannot find it, use the two-sign result and read both profiles. Most people recognise themselves in one of them within a minute.
How to use your Moon sign well
Read your Moon sign as a list of needs, not as a list of rules. A Moon in Taurus needs calm and comfort. A Moon in Gemini needs conversation and variety. Once you know your need, you can serve it on purpose instead of wondering why you feel off.
It also works in relationships. Compare your Moon sign with the one of a partner, a friend or a flatmate. You will often find that what looks like a clash of characters is simply two different ways of feeling safe.
And a gentle reminder from Nebu: astrology is a tradition and a form of entertainment and reflection. It does not predict your future and it replaces no one's advice. Take what rings true and leave the rest.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my moon sign?
Enter your birth date in the calculator above. For an exact result, add your birth time and birthplace. Nebu then shows the sign the Moon was in at the moment you were born.
Can I calculate my moon sign without a birth time?
Yes. Most of the time the date is enough. If the Moon changed sign on your birthday, you will see both possible signs and the time of the change.
What does the moon sign mean in astrology?
It stands for your emotional world: your moods, your needs, your instincts and what makes you feel at home. Many astrologers see it as the second most personal part of a chart after the Sun.
How often does the Moon change signs?
About every two and a half days. It passes through all twelve signs in roughly 27 days, which makes it the fastest mover in your chart.
Is the moon sign the same as the sun sign?
Only by coincidence, roughly one time in twelve. Your Sun sign comes from your birth date alone, while your Moon sign depends on the exact position of the Moon that day.
What is the difference between moon sign and rising sign?
The Moon sign shows how you feel inside. The rising sign, also called the ascendant, shows how you come across at first glance. For the rising sign you always need birth time and place.
