What does it mean to dream about your ex?
Dreaming about your ex does not mean you want them back, and it does not mean they are thinking of you. It usually says more about what the relationship stood for, or about something in your life right now. Your brain simply likes to reuse a cast it knows well.
What does the dream mean?
An ex is not just a person in your head, it is a whole file: memories, habits, feelings, old versions of yourself. When they show up in a dream, the question is often less “what do I feel about them?” and more “what does this ex stand for?” It might be a past self, a time of your life, a kind of closeness, or a lesson you have not fully filed away.
How it feels is the key. A warm dream can be nostalgia or a wish for comfort. An awkward one can point to feelings that are still unsorted. Waking up thinking about them is not proof of unfinished business. It is proof that you are human and that your brain works night shifts.
Dreaming of your ex with someone new
Seeing your ex happy with someone else can sting, awake or asleep. It often touches on worth, comparison or the fear of being replaced, even if you are long over it. Sometimes the new person stands for what you feel you lack, or for change in general. Ask whether the feeling is about them or about you.
Dreaming of getting back together with your ex
Getting back together in a dream can happen even when you are very happy with the breakup. It can be nostalgia, a wish for something familiar, or a hint that a quality you had with them, such as ease or fun, is missing now. It rarely means you should call. It means ask what you miss.
Dreaming of kissing your ex
A kiss with your ex is often more about closeness, comfort or a part of the past you remember fondly than about desire. If it felt tender, think goodbye or peace. If it felt wrong, think boundaries. Either way, a dream kiss is a feeling acting out a scene, not an invitation.
Dreaming of your ex ignoring you
Being ignored by your ex hits an old nerve, usually about feeling unseen or unimportant. It can also mean the relationship is truly over and your mind is finally agreeing. Neither is a message from them. It is a message from you to you.
💭 How did the dream feel?
- Longing
- Missing the ex in a dream is often missing a time or a feeling. Ask what that time gave you that you could give yourself now.
- Anger
- Anger in an ex dream may be old business that still wants a hearing. Letting yourself feel it in daylight can help it settle.
- Relief
- Relief in the dream often confirms that the breakup was the right call, or that you are further along than you thought.
- Awkwardness
- An awkward meeting can simply be a rehearsal of an uncomfortable emotion. Nobody is grading it.
🧠 What research says
A diary study by Schredl and Wood (2021) analyzed 1,612 dream reports from 425 students. Partners appeared more often than ex-partners, and ex-partner dreams had more negative interactions. Unexpectedly, they also had more positive emotions than partner dreams. In plain words, ex dreams are a mixed bag, and a mixed bag is normal.
Cartwright and colleagues (2006) found that divorcing people whose depression lifted had more emotional, well developed dreams about the ex-spouse, which fits the idea that dreams can be part of working through a relationship. The wider continuity idea says dreams reflect waking concerns (Schredl and Hofmann, 2003). Seen that way, an ex dream shows your own thoughts and feelings at work, old or new. Research cannot read your private meaning, and dreams do not show what the other person thinks.
📜 In tradition and old dream books
Popular lore says that dreaming of an ex means they are thinking of you, or that you secretly want them back. The second idea echoes Freud’s theory that dreams fulfil hidden wishes (The Interpretation of Dreams, 1899, dated 1900). Modern dream research leans on continuity with waking life instead, so the secret wish is one theory among several. As for your ex beaming thoughts into your sleep: that one belongs firmly to folklore.
✍️ Questions to ask yourself
- What did your ex stand for in your life, and where is that theme showing up now?
- How did you feel when you woke up: sad, relieved, curious?
- Is there something from that relationship, a lesson or a habit, that you want to keep or leave behind?
👁 Nebu’s take
Nine thousand years of listening, and I have met every ex in every disguise. The dream is almost never about them. It is about you, and the file your brain decided to open at 3 a.m. Be kind to that file.
Frequently asked questions
Does dreaming about my ex mean they are thinking about me?
No. Your dream is assembled from your own memories and feelings, so it tells you about your side of the story. What your ex is thinking stays, as ever, their business.
Does dreaming about my ex mean I want them back?
Not necessarily. Ex dreams can turn up long after a good breakup, and a diary study found they mix negative interactions with positive feelings. Ask what you miss rather than who.
Why do I keep dreaming about my ex?
Repeated ex dreams often follow a stretch of stress, change or nostalgia, because dreams pick up what occupies us. If it hurts a lot or goes on for a long time, talking to a friend or counselor can help.
