What does it mean to dream about flying?

In short

Dreaming of flying is most often read as a feeling of freedom, perspective or letting go. If you cannot get off the ground, it can reflect something that holds you back. Many people have had this dream, so it is a normal one with a very good reputation.

What does the dream mean?

Few dreams are as popular as flying. You lift off, the ground shrinks and your worries stay behind with the laundry. In dream reading, flying is usually about freedom, an overview of a situation, or a wish to rise above something. It is one of those rare cases where the dream feels as good as the explanation sounds.

The mood decides. Soaring with ease often mirrors confidence and a sense of possibility. Flying low, struggling or dropping out of the sky may reflect doubt or a feeling of being held back, and it is not a forecast. Even a fear of heights can tag along, because your dream self has opinions about altitude too.

Flying high

Soaring above rooftops or clouds is usually read as freedom, confidence or a new perspective. It often turns up when you have solved something, or when you wish you could step outside a situation and see all of it. Enjoy the view, and ask what in your life could use more of it.

Trying to fly but being unable to

Flapping your arms and going nowhere is a frustrating twist. It often reflects a feeling that something is holding you back: doubts, obligations, a task you cannot shake. It is no failure. It mostly shows that you want lift, so ask what extra weight you could drop.

Flying over water

Water often stands for feelings, so flying above it can mean you are looking at your emotions from a safe distance. Calm and clear, it may mirror an overview and some peace. If you worried about dropping in, you may be unsure how to keep your balance with what you feel.

Floating

Drifting slowly without any effort is calm, dreamy and sometimes odd. It often mirrors relaxation, detachment or a wish to be free of weight, and now and then it signals feeling a little disconnected. Ask yourself whether the floating felt peaceful or aimless.

💭 How did the dream feel?

Joy
Pure delight in the air usually mirrors a surge of freedom or confidence. Let yourself enjoy it, and keep a little of it for the morning.
Fear
If the height or speed frightened you, the dream may be about a big step that feels exciting and scary at once.
Calm
A gentle, silent glide often matches a time of inner peace, or a wish for it.
Frustration
Being unable to rise, or landing again and again, often points to a goal you feel stuck on. Look at what weighs it down.

🧠 What research says

Flying is a well-known typical dream. In the survey of Canadian first-year students by Nielsen and colleagues (2003), 48.3 percent had dreamed of flying or soaring, men more often than women (58.1 against 44.4 percent). Freud proposed that dreams fulfil wishes (Freud, 1900), which fits the pleasure of effortless flight, though no theory can be tested on a single dream.

A flying dream can also be the moment you realise that you are dreaming. That is called lucid dreaming, and a meta-analysis of 50 years of research found that 55 percent of people have had at least one lucid dream and 23 percent have them monthly or more (Saunders and colleagues, 2016). Its neuroscience is reviewed by Baird and colleagues (2019). Whether flying means freedom for you is for you to judge, since that reading is symbolic, not a research result.

📜 In tradition and old dream books

People have linked flight with freedom for as long as there have been birds to envy. Folk dream books mostly call flying high a lucky dream and flying low or struggling a sign of obstacles, which is a lot of pressure to put on one night of gliding. Treat it as tradition, and let the feeling in the dream have the last word.

🌍 Spiritual meaning

In the Bible, wings are an image of strength renewed by hope: Isaiah 40:31 (NIV) says that those who hope in the Lord “will soar on wings like eagles.” Some Christian dream readers therefore see flying as a symbol of spiritual lift, trust and release from burdens. Other traditions have their own winged images. Read it as tradition and faith, not as proof.

✍️ Questions to ask yourself

  1. Where did you fly to, and what did you see from up there?
  2. Did you fly with ease, or did you have to work for it?
  3. What in your life could use more lift or a better view?

👁 Nebu’s take

I float for a living, so I take flying dreams personally. Enjoy the view, and when you land, bring a bit of that lightness back to Monday.

Frequently asked questions

Is dreaming of flying a good sign?

Mostly it feels good and is read as freedom or confidence, but it is not a prediction. How the flight felt matters more than the fact of it.

How common is it to dream about flying?

Quite common. In a survey of Canadian first-year students, 48.3 percent had dreamed of flying or soaring, 58.1 percent of the men and 44.4 percent of the women (Nielsen and colleagues, 2003).

Is dreaming of flying the same as lucid dreaming?

Not necessarily. A lucid dream means you know that you are dreaming while it goes on, and a meta-analysis found that 55 percent of people have had at least one. You can fly without realising it is a dream, and you can realise it without flying.
